The Russian architect company AB Elis used the excess time caused by the financial crisis 2008 to create a modern version of J.R.R Tolkiens underground city of Moria by drawing up the plans for moving the Siberian city of Mirniy down into its own diamond mine. It will be sealed up by a nearly 1 km wide dome of transparent solar panels. The goal of the whole construction is to make the city more inhabitable as the average temperature in January lays around -35°C for the area. Maybe this is the next trend in construction, going downwards instead of reaching for the skies? One can just hope they attempt to build it.
